The Department of Physics, NIT Meghalaya was established in 2010. The department has actively imparted education to the students of B. Tech 1st years in theoretical aspects of various areas along with related experiments to provide greater understanding of the subjects that would help to became better engineers. The open electives are floated for B.Tech from 2nd Year onwards. The PhD programme in the Department is successfully running in the domain of Condensed Matter Physics, Applied Optics, Nuclear and Particle Physics. The Department has also started M. Sc. programme from 2015-2016 session with special emphasis on the applied aspects of Physics.

The mission of the department is to create a synergy of high quality teaching with cutting-edge research to develop human potential to its fullest extent, to create man-power who are intellectually can capable and comprehend concepts in Physics and apply them in fundamental and fields to meet the present and future challenges in science and technology.
