National Service Scheme (NSS)

National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS was launched in the year 1969 on the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi. Under the scheme, youth from various institutions of the country participate in social activities like cleaning, providing education to the poor, organizing blood donation camps and other outreach programs. NIT Meghalaya has been very active in performing various community services involving active participation of the students. After starting up the campus at Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah in 2012, NIT Meghalaya started various NSS activities as listed below:

  • Cleaning activities within the Institute (and its surroundings) and in all NIT hostels were carried out.
  • A blood donation camp was organized by the NSS team of NIT Meghalaya along with a team from NEIGRIHMS during August 2014. There was active participation of the students in blood donation.
  • In October 2015, NSS team organized a computer awareness and cleanliness drive programme at a village school in Mylliem. Students and faculty of NIT Meghalaya contributed towards the donation of a Desktop Computer to the school. About 90 primary school students took part in the computer awareness programme where NIT Meghalaya students gave lectures on various computer topics. A cleanliness and plantation drive was also performed in and around the village.
  • In February 2016, the students started preparing paper bags from waste paper collected from the Institute. Almost more than 600 paper bags have been prepared till date. The motivation behind the effort is to encourage the use of paper bags in various shops around the city.
The NSS team of NIT Meghalaya is constantly striving to help the people of the communities in the region. This will instil a sense of responsibility in the students towards their communities and help in shaping them to become responsible citizens of the country.
